A proposed United Nations resolution that would recognize the Srebrenica massacre as genocide has caused strong reactions in Serbia and the Republika Srpska of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their leaders, Aleksandër Vucic and Milorad Dodik, warned of riots if it is approved. What is hidden behind this frenzy and how serious are their threats, was also the main question of an article from the German newspaper "Die Welt". "Any conflict can cause an uncontrolled fire," writes the newspaper. A journalist from the German Welt newspaper visited Srebrenica, writing about the genocide resolution being prepared at the United Nations. The entry recalls the execution of some eight thousand Bosniaks, which the Hague Tribunal characterized as genocide in its judgment.

War scenario

"Die Welt" writes that Rwanda and Germany, at the suggestion of the Bosnian ambassador to the UN, have submitted a proposal for a resolution to the UN General Assembly. Like the Holocaust and the genocide against the Tutsi in Ruanka, Srebrenica should be recognized internationally as a genocide and the day of remembrance would be celebrated on 11 July. The vote is on Thursday, the German newspaper recalls. "Berlin supports the adoption of the resolution, but the opponents of the resolution threaten escalation", further writes "Die Welt". First of all, writes the newspaper, it is the president of the RS, Milorad Dodik, who has been seeking the secession of the RS from Bosnia and Herzegovina for years. If the resolution is approved, the Serbs will withdraw from all decision-making processes at the level of BiH. Camil Durakovic, one of Dodik's two deputies, was more than clear in his statement to the German newspaper. "If Dodik announces secession, war will break out here within an hour," says Durakovic. Bosnia is the most fragile country in the region and is currently in the worst crisis since the breakup of Yugoslavia. "Any conflict here can cause an uncontrolled fire, like in the 1990s", writes "Die Welt".

Vucic as a key actor

It is debatable, the newspaper adds, whether Dodik is serious in carrying out the threats. Some say that he simply wants to make concessions to the Europeans and Americans because he is under political pressure. "Die Welt" writes that representatives of Western governments "behind the scenes" admit that the development in Bosnia-Herzegovina and in the entire region is going to a "dangerous wrong direction". "And Belgrade supports the course of Republika Srpska," the newspaper writes, recalling that Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? requested that the resolution on Srebrenica not go before the General Assembly, but before the Security Council, where a similar resolution already failed in 2015 due to of Russia's veto. "Serbia is destabilizing Bosnia and Herzegovina," said Bosnian Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic. He calls Vucic's reaction to the resolution "shocking" and calls on the German government to use its economic influence in Serbia. "Germany should exert more pressure," he says, since Vucic is a key player in the region. "I worry that we are heading for a bigger crisis than anything we've had," the politician says.

The secret plan

Already knowing that the resolution on Srebrenica, which condemns Serbia for war crimes and genocide, will be approved in the General Assembly of the United Nations, Vucic has decided to postpone the joint Assembly, planned to convene for Easter. The purpose of this postponement is because Mirolad Dodik and Vucic have agreed to convene the joint assembly immediately after the adoption of the Resolution on Srebrenica in the UN General Assembly. By openly defying the West and showing no compunction and no remorse for the genocide caused by the Serbs in 1995 in Bosnia-Herzegovina. A move that will be used to defuse a little bit, the adoption of a resolution that makes the Serbian state responsible for the crimes of the war.
