Huge delays and queues left Birmingham Airport passengers frustrated on Monday.

Holidaymakers took to Twitter and Facebook to complain - with one man suggesting it would be quicker to fly to Heathrow and drive back to Birmingham.

Jacob Dutton tweeted: “Quicker to fly to Heathrow and drive to Brum rather than a 20min wait for stairs and this queue for immigration @bhx_official. Sad!”

Queues for passport control are stretching for more than 100m, giving holidaymakers a miserable return to the country, reports the Birmingham Mail.

Information screens at the airport state that passengers can expect to wait for up to 45 minutes to go through passport control.

But travellers also faced delays as they picked up their luggage.

A spokesman for Birmingham Airport said: “Birmingham Airport can confirm that ground handler, Swissport, is at times experiencing staffing issues which are intermittently impacting on the operation and passengers.

“Swissport has employed a number of additional staff but passengers may suffer delays, particularly in baggage reclaim.

“We apologise to our customers and understand their frustration but reassure them that Birmingham Airport is doing everything in its power to support the operation through contingencies and additional resource.”

Swissport, the company responsible for the airport’s ground crew, deny that they have any staffing issues.

A spokesman said: “Whilst there were a few arrivals last night that were off schedule, which caused some delays, we don’t have any staffing issues.”

The chaos comes amid a tumultous time for the airport. Changes to the vehicle drop-off pricing has been met with rage, whilst long queues and delays within the airport itself have become almost commonplace.

We have approached UK Border Force (UKBF), who controls the Border for arriving passengers into the UK and Birmingham Airport, for a comment.
